The Hebrew word Kishkush (קִשְׁקוּשׁ) can mean, depending on context, a scribble, a rattling sound, idle chatter, or nonsense (as in “Udi’s music, what a Kishkush!”). In my piece Kishkush for ensemble, written for Bang on a Can Summer Festival, I took a single zigzaggy melodic shape and treated it with the same sense of careless fantasy that I treat my scribbles.
